This unfortunately doesn't have a straightforward answer. What you want to achieve with your skylight will determine what type of skylight you need. If you are after natural light and a bit of ventilation then a Redcliffe Skylights' product is the better option. If it is just a bathroom, toilet or laundry then the Circular Series skylight will help ventilate and bring a bit of light into the room. If you just want to brighten the room as much as you can or the room is on the lower level of a 2 story house, then you may benefit from a solar powered Illume. If you are after a feature in your kitchen and want to open and close the skylight, or want blinds to control the direct sunlight on those extra hot days, then you may want a VELUX.
We do not do repairs, but we can recommend several trusted installers to repair existing skylights even if it may not be our skylight. If you have taken any photos you can email them to us with your details and we can then discuss what options you might have.
We can supply replacement for most domes, although there are many other different shapes and sizes to our style domes. To work out if we can help, we need the flange-to-flange size as indicated in below photos, and a photo of the existing dome. If we don't have the size or type of dome you are after we may be able to make a mould to suit, otherwise if it is another brand we may be able to point you in the direction of who can help.
All skylight domes come standard with 3mm High Impact Acrylic in opal or clear, but you can also get 4.5mm High Impact Acrylic, 3mm Polycarbonate in opal, clear or grey tint (subject to availability), A Grade Safety glass or Insulated Glass unit, equivalent to the Velux products.
We have 4 different options available for our diffusers for the Circular Series, or 5 options for the square/rectangular skylights. The standard diffuser is Y15 Prismatic, this prismatic works best to disperse light evenly throughout the room. We also have Y12 Prismatic which has slightly smaller prisms, Lite Opal, Seadrift and for square options we also have eggcrate. You can see example photos here.
All skylights will let some degree of heat through. Clear domes or single glazed glass will let in more heat than an opal dome or insulated glass units, but it all depends on the size of the skylight and the skylight shaft. The domes themselves are all 99% UV rated but a general rule of thumb is the larger the skylight then the more heat, unless you get the solar powered alternative, or blinds to control the direct sunlight coming through.
All round skylights come with flexible duct as indicated in the below photos. We have a variety of sizes available in the flexible ducting for circular skylights but only a select few for square and rectangular skylights. Any other sizes may need a solid shaft built to suit.
Our skylights are all made to order so we have a standard skylight range but we can also manufacture skylights to your specifications. If you have a specialised skylight you need made, give us a call today for a quote.
Yes, all skylights can be naturally ventilated or mechanically ventilated. Standard skylights can come with perforated mesh or "blanks" (as indicated below) and a gap between the diffuser and ceiling trim to allow for natural air flow. Mechanically ventilated skylights will require an electrician to wire up, but there are a few different designs available. Click here for more details on options available for the Circular Series Skylights. You can get an exhaust fan in the diffuser of the square and rectangular skylights or even a fan mounted in the dome.
Whilst we do not offer installation services, we are able to recommend several trusted installers who can help.
Our skylight trims are designed so the water flows off the dome and any condensation from inside the skylight can escape. We do not recommend putting any silicone onto the dome or trims as this can cause build up of water and future issues and premature rusting.
When we say "dome", we refer to the acrylic (plastic) on the roof flashing that the light passes through, as indicated in the below photos.
The "trims" are the metal surrounds/brackets with the pop-rivet in each corner, that hold the dome into place on the roof flashing as indicated in the below photos.
The "flange" is the flat section on the very edge of our domes. When ordering a new dome, we will ask for the "flange to flange" sizes which are the overall outside to outside measurements of the dome or glass as indicated in the below photos.
